All the big guns – Germany, Russia, Italy, France, Holland, England, and Spain extended their leads of their Euro 2012 qualifying groups during the weekend.
Germany extended their lead at the top of Group A with a convincing 4-0 win over Kazakhstan yesterday.
With 15 points from five games, meaning Joachim Loew’s side can as good as start reserving their tickets for Polang and Ukraine next summer.
Belgium sprang a surprise in Austria as Axel Witsel struck twice in a 2-0 victory that propelled his them into second place with 10 points behind Germany.
Group B is developing into a pot bioler with previous leaders Russia held to a goalless draw in Armenia.
Those dropped points mean that Slovakia, 1-0 winners in Andorra, and the Republic of Ireland, 2-1 winners over Macedonia, now join the Russians in a three-way tie on ten points at the top of the group.
Italy are the runaway leaders in group C with 13 points from five matches, beating Slovania 1-0 on Friday. “This victory will help us rebuild confidence in Italian football,” Italy coach Cesare Prandelli told reporters. Serbia moves to the second spot in place of Slovania with seven points from five matches. Serbia beats North Ireland 2-1.
In Group D, France defeated Luxembourgh 2-0, to maintain the top spot with 12 points from five matches. However they took their time to settle against a team ranked almost 100 places below them and despite dominating possesion they had to wait until the 28th minute before defender Philippe Mexes header home.
They sealed the points an a four-point lead in their group 18 minutes from time when Yoann Gourcuff volleyed in after a Franck Ribbery cross was deflected by a Luxembourgh defender.
Holland marched six points clear in Group E with 15 points from five matches after their domilition of second-place Hungary 4-0 in Budapest.
England secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Wales at the Millennium Stadium and gave the visitors command of Group G on goal difference from Montenergro, with 10 points from four matches, respectively.
“We played really well, we passed the ball quickly and created chances to score goals with no chances for Wales,” a delighted Favio Capello. He further on to say: “The goals that we scored were really nice and in every moment we were focused on the game with was important”.
On the downside, a booking for Wayne Rooney, means the striker will miss the next qualifier, against Switzerland at Wembley in June.
David Villa became Spain’s leading goalscorer as the world champions came from behind to beat the Czech Republic 2-1 on Friday.
The European champions were trailling to a first-half Jaroslav Plasil goal before Willa scored twice in four minutes to reach 46 goals for his countary, two more than Raul, and send Spain six points clear of the second-placed Czechs in Group I.
